skilo54, I just got about forty-five of the 1d Downey Head Issues and am pleased to utilize your informative thread to identify which issue I have. Your pictorial guide is the best reference that I can find. Thanks again.
Regards
Mike

skilo, what a brilliant thread. Concise, informative, fascinating. Thankyou! I'm not a collector of Britain, but have one of these I'd been trying to sell in a group on ebay. I noticed the 3/4 head and thought it was interesting considering the monarchs were usually seen in profile.
Thanks for bringing such insight to what, I guess, was considered a flop in it's day.

Catalogued Varieties

They can occur at any and all stages of stamp production. Design errors, errors from using the wrong paper, colour errors, inverted center errors and perforation errors are only some of the kinds of errors that are known.

Many old stamps have been extensively studied by specialists, who have found numerous differences that allow a person to determine the exact position of the stamp on the printed sheet. "Flyspecks" because of dust on the printing plates, or "donuts" because of an air bubble on an offset printing plate are not as valuable as more dramatic errors or errors that were constant throughout the stamp's print run.

Below is a Die 1B 'Superstamp' I have created to illustrate the catalogued varieties known to exist and are listed in the specialized catalogue.

And for comparison to my illustration, two varieties from my own collection.

N8-I- White scratch to left of Lions face:

N8-D- White spot left of 'O' and above 'T':

I hope this illustration is handy for you all, may help to identify a gem in your own collection!

Kind Regards:

Skilo54

Skilo, thanks for adding some more instructional pictorials to the study of Downey Heads. I will certainly use this in my examination of recently acquired stamps.

Right-on mhc99! Please post anything interesting that you find here in the Downey Head thread! I would love to see others interesting discoveries! I have a bunch of non-catalogued varieties recorded in my collection, so you never know... a flyspeck one day, a newly listed flaw the next! A good area to look for neat little frame breaks etc, is in the 'ONE PENNY' text tablet and the frame lines surrounding it.

Have fun with your inspecting!

Hello folks,

Here is a perfin pair that has a beautiful London Hooded Circle used for Late Fees, noted by the L1 D in the postmark.

Back with more in a bit,

And here to accompany it is a nice Die II perfin single with a Dublin postmark. I always enjoy finding a nice used Downey with a Scottish or Irish postmark!

Have a Good One,

This stamp is a Die 2 on piece that has the 'Missing Crown' variety. What is unusual about this stamp is the way it has been separated from the others. Used from London E C and cancelled on a Columbia machine. The stamp is a coil stamp and the machines at this period used a blade to seperate the stamps as they were vended. This example shows significant misalignment of the roll, due to human error or slippage of the machine.

Have a Good One,

Skilo54

That was absolutely fascinating skilo54. Not only on the subject matter but also on how well you have gone about it. Behind this simple and clear exposition must lie an incredible amount of work, it has all been very impressive and I am rather sorry that there aren't more pages to read and study.

Thanks for the great work!

I'd also like to express my appreciation. This has been a hugely informative thread, and one that has given me a reason to focus on one particular area of British stamps.

Hi folks, I hope you are all well, and your collections are looking better than ever!

I have been extremely busy with work the past few months, so haven't been able to devote the proper amount of time to my stamps, but I would like to share some scans of some of the more recent additions to my collection. Please feel free to contribute any scans you may have of this wonderful stamp, I would love to see them!

1d Carmine die 1B crown watermark. A fine mint complete bottom row (A11 close) perf type 2 with plate 2 marking and "reversed 4" below 20/12.
