Stamps issued to conmemorate Avianca´s 4oth anniversary; the oldest airline in the America´s and second oldest in the world.

The stamps show Avianca´s (then SCADTA) first plane, a Junker´s F-13 floatplane; and the most modern plane on their fleet in 1959, a Lockheed 749 Constellation.

Also, on the 35 cent, the $1.00 purple and the $1.50 yellow-green stamps an image of Colombia´s first air service mail stamp an overprint from 18.06.1919 (200 issued) is shown.

Family,

When it comes to constellations on stamps, I always think of C53 - the 1959 Alaska airmail stamp. It has always appealed to me and is one of my favorites.

I also remember when Alaska became a state. A lady from Texas was interviewed on the news. She denounced the fact that Texas would no longer be the largest state in the Union!

On another note, riding in a Super Connie was a real treat. Eastern Airlines (remember them?) had a fleet of them used Boston-Washington DC. Luxurious and comfortable, the ride was like riding in a heavyweighr Pullman railroad sleeper.

I also caught a ride on a C-121 (the military version of the super connie) from Europe to Westover, Massachusetts. A rough and long ride. We had to lay overnight in the Azores.
