Johann Baptist Strauss II (1825 – 1899), was an Austrian composer of light music, particularly dance music and operettas as well as a violinist. He composed over 500 waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and other types of dance music, as well as several operettas and a ballet.

This stamp commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Johann Strauss, issued by Austria on January 18, 2025. Strauss was known as "The Waltz King", and was largely responsible for the popularity of the waltz in the 19th century.

Slovenes in the USA

The commemorative stamp showcases two musical instruments that resonate deeply with both Slovene emigrants and American culture: the diatonic accordion (commonly known as the button box) and the banjo. These instruments, though rooted in different traditions, have been warmly embraced by Slovene communities across the United States. Their popularity reflects a unique cultural fusion - where heritage meets adaptation, and music becomes a bridge between homelands.

Nice post LaoPhil about Johann Strauss.

Austria has issued a number of stamps to honour one of their favourite sons.

This one was issued in 1949 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of
the death of Johann Strauss the Younger.

While I was visiting Austria in 2014 I spent a couple of hours walking around
the Vienna Central Cemetery (Wiener Zentralfriedhof) which is the final
resting place of many famous persons including Johann Strauss.

I took a pic of the grave monument of Johann Strauss and beside him is
another well known composer Johannes Brahms
