While looking at the website www.british-stamps.net (or www.greatbritainstamps.net) on the page showing the Machins on page 11 of the Machin listings on the right side of the page is a list of Imperforate Edge Machins. The single illustration shows a pair of Machins perf between but imperf on the right and left sides.

I thought I had a reasonable selection of an intermediate collection of Machins (over 500 different). I was surprised by these stamps. Must they be collected in pairs?

If I were going through a mixture of Machins before now, and had encountered a stamp with a straight edge, I would have thought nothing of it. (Ignorance is bliss)

But the price floored me---48 stamps, I assume pairs, for 59 pounds.

Only a mild expletive---Good Grief.

Does anyone know why these were produced in this format?
