Polar Bears on Danish Christmas seals (no pun intended ) 1980

The wording down the side of the sheet is in Danish (I think), Inuit (I assume) and English (I am confident!) , and reads," In the depth of the polar night, the spark of light is set alight: The polar bear in a snowy den brings forth her litter".

This is maybe the only stamp issued for one very special polar bear. Knut was born in the Berlin Zoo in December 2006 and was raised by Thomas Dörflein, because Motherbear rejected her cubs. Knut soon became a major attraction to the Zoo, and was in the world media, including the New York Times; he died of a mysterious brain disease before he was 5 years old. The monument to Knut was done by Josef Tabachnyk in bronze. Semipostal stamp for Nature conservation. Design Kym Erdmann and by the way, the stamp was voted most popular of 2008 stamps in Germany.
