Polar Bears on Danish Christmas seals (no pun intended  ) 1980   The wording down the side of the sheet is in Danish (I think), Inuit (I assume) and English (I am confident!) , and reads," In the depth of the polar night, the spark of light is set alight: The polar bear in a snowy den brings forth her litter". |

François Pompon (1855-1933) was a French sculptor who became famous for his stylized animals. Here is an image of a stamp designed after Pompon's sculpture L'Ours blanc ("The White Bear," 1922), printed by photogravure, and issued by France on July 2, 2005 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the artist's bitrh, Scott No. 3099, Y&T No. 3806, plus a photo of François Pompon's sculpture. - nethryk  |
