hi Jeff, I've never seen the WG one before but FS is an old friend - it's from the Foreign Section in the main central London offices to cancel mail sent overseas. In earlier times the cancel was FB for Foreign Branch. Inland mail was cancelled IS for Inland Section.

Is that a "G"? I was thinking it was good old "WC" or West Central, a London district...

jhlovell, I knew the answer about FB and FS because I asked about FB a month ago. I'm not familiar with the first cancel but I know that "WC" is used to identify one of the London Districts.

Handstamp Printed matter.

Single ring hammer used in branch, district or suburban offices.
WC = West Central
These went out of use by 1920
My catalogue does not show any west central with office name below
which looks very much like an abbrev of "St John's Wood" ?

Very nice example.

...coming up for auction?

I can certainly accept it's London WC and the abbreviation at the bottom very much looks like SJOHW but I think St John's Wood has always been in London NW.

Perfin initals are W D first line and underneath & S; total would read W D & S. Any ideas on the perfin. I doubt that it will be coming up for auction, I don't have another, but my mind is very wishy washy with world stamps. Biggest problem is that when we discuss a stamp like this it begins to take on so much more character and meaning, it becomes more personal, if that makes sense.

Jeff, the best way to clear your mind is to clear your desk...off to auction, I say.
