A few interesting British Guiana postmarks... The first is Berbice Railway, a Traveling Post Office on the first railway in South America. The second is H.M.P.S. which stands for His Majesty's Penal Settlement: This is from the Essequibo Steamer, which ran until 1965: I'm no expert on these, so all of this is subject to correction.

My other choices were E.C., Demerara or R Georgetown. Had to end in "E" as far as I can tell... |

I'll give this thread a bump. Here is British Guiana 4c definitive (Scott 232, S.G. 310b) with an E.C. (East Coast) Railway postmark. Robert |

I do know that 19th century British Guiana postmarks is a vast field.
I can only imagine how big the field is from the first half of the 20th century.
A fascinating area from a fascinating country! |

I found this stamp over 30 years ago In an old approval book. I was a member of the British Caribbean philatelic Society at the time and this postmark turned out to be the earliest known date of use. I assume by now someone is come up with an earlier date . The E C signifies East Coast the name given to the coast east of Georgetown generally referred to as the East Coast Demerara. The 5 indicates that it was used at Mahaica. |

Hi rascal,
The information I have says this is still the earliest date.
That said, I'm not sure how up to date my information is! |

Hi Rod,
Nothing in Billigs by the looks of it.
The two reference books I'm aware of are Proud's Postal History book and Townsend & Howe's Stamps & Postal History book. |
