Looks like I hit it lucky too. I was fortunate enough to have a new local club member give me the 2008 Scotts on CD for free!

Slowly getting there <G>

I have been lucky enough to buy year old copies of Scott's at my local library when they receive the new editions. You might want to check with you local library to see if they sell old copies.

Very true

I was also fortunate enough to buy a discarded reference book from our local library some years ago. It is a general philatelic reference book printed in 1929 and in great shape.
The title is "Stamps: An Outline of Philately" by Kent B. Stiles. It is a collectors item by itself. I paid a whopping 25 cents for it too.

My local library had the 2009 6 volume Scotts for reference only
and the 2007 set for checking out.
In January I inquired with the lady at the main desk if they're ever going to get new ones and she said that she will order the 2011 set. When I told her that I'm interested in acquiring the 2007 set when the new ones came in and that perhaps I could leave my number and someone could contact me so I could purchase the old ones, she said they can't do that.
Well the 2011 set was in the reference section by middle of February
and the 2009 set is now available for check out but none of the 2007 volumes were ever on the discarded shelf.
Someone had beat me to them....or did they have connections with the librarian?

I don't know how it is in other areas, but in the various cities I've frequented in Texas, the "Friends of the Library" organizations get first dibs on all books that are removed from circulation or donated. It is considered part of the benefits of membership and a thank you for their volunteer services. After that, the remaining books are made available to the general public at book sales.

I don't know if we have "Friends of the Library" organizations
here in Ontario, I do know there are volunteers stocking the shelves,
usually high school students.
I don't know why they need volunteers when on my latest local municipal
tax bill the portion for libraries was the same as for water/waste/solid = (garbage pick up)

"Friends of the Library" ? probably not.

Friend of the librarian ? probably.

I too live in Ontario and the local library here will not let you know personally about specific books being sold.

So, to sum up, you just have to be there at the right time to get whatever you want.

IOW - you pays your money, you takes your chances

Got my set today. Three books look new, two have lightly wrinkled back covers and one book has significant damage with about a three inch split in the spine. I will post pictures soon.

I never bought the scratched/dented copies from Amos, but I have bought used library copies off of Amazon for under $15/ea. They came like brand new and just had a library sticker on the binding and a stamp on the inside cover. I could live with that!

The Scott Specialized is all I need. I can't afford to collect other countries so I don't need the complete set. On a side note, I used to subscribe to Linn's but let that subscription go several years ago. However, I am still a member of Amos Advantage and still get the discounts for hinges etc. At one time, I lived in Sidney, OH and had a chance to take a tour of the Amos plant. If ever in the area, take a break and visit the place, you'll find out that Amos Press is a lot more than just printing stamp stuff.

If they're out of stock, it might be temporary. See what kegsgym posted on April 2. Perhaps they come up with more as they open new boxes to fill orders. Or however it might work.
