It looks like GC paper but I have seen a thick paper variety listed.
It doesn't look like the slate to me.

Hi AnthonyUK,

Is GC paper can explain a color difference like that?

Since I found this stamp, I saw a lot of this "Riviere Bretonne" stamps and they are always green... not gray/blue...

By deduction, if it is not slate then it has been
subject to abuse.

Whenever a stamp is used, you cannot tell what
damage it has suffered till it got to your desk.

You have no idea what pigments were used in the ink, nor what
devious chemicals were added to the soaking water
when the stamp was washed.
I have one River Bretonne that is Turquoise.

Here is a stamp green to slate

Hi Rod222,

Yes, it is possible but cancel is exactly like others "Riviere Bretonne" I have. Cancel is dark not gray or pale. If someone altered the stamp... cancel is altered too... no?

I like this interesting and special stamp :-)

Add a "Scan Alone" max res picture with contrast and color auto :

Thank you Rod222!

Perhaps to put your mind at rest,
put it in a glassine, and take it to your next stamp show,
there is sure to be a French specialist amongst the collectors.

Perhaps I think in the negative, but as soon as a stamp is used
I am very skeptical of oddities.

At the price of the slate, I can understand your query :)

Hi Rod222,

I sent pictures to specialists. Some say it is impossible to be an "Ardoise" stamps because this is an essay. Other say like you and I understand that. But an essay with denticle and gum used by someone is possible too... who know? I just want to be sure it is not an ardoise stamp. Maybe someone have a stamp like this one and will see this tread :-)

For me, rarity is the most important because there are too many stamps. The "Ardoise" stamp is an essay, very rare and not suppose to be used.

Thank you!
