Stanley Gibbons lists one colour only for the re-engraved Waterlow seahorse Morocco Agencies French currency overprints illustrated above.

These two stamps are quite distinct in colour - the example on the right being chocolate (the catalogued colour), and the stamp on the left runs to a definite red brown.

Does anyone have a reference for shades of these re-engraved issues?

Plateflaw, not sure if this is going to help you but here it goes.

The 2/6 Sea Horse comes in 6 different colours:

Printed by Waterlow Bros & Layton

Deep Sepia-Brown - Mint CV £300, Used CV £125
Sepia-Brown - Mint CV £300, Used CV £125

Printed by De La Rue & Co

Deep Yellow-Brown - Mint CV £325, Used £150
Yellow-Brown - Mint CV £325, Used CV £140
Pale Brown (Worn Plate) - Mint CV £300, Used £140
Sepia (Seal-Brown) - Mint CV £325, Used £150

This information has come from the SG Great Britain Concise 2001 Edition, so the CV values are out of date, but will give you a rough idea.

Thanks for that Roos.

I have found a London Philatelist article from 1958 and it states that there are two distinct shades with the 3 Francs surcharge - chocolate and red-brown.

The two shades are also found on the "MOROCCO AGENCIES" only overprints.

Oh well, there goes another "new discovery"!

Chocolate-brown on the left and red-brown on the right.

OP was correct.
