Berlin issued this stamp (Mi. #731) to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the death of Wilhelm von Humboldt. The artwork for the stamp depicts a closeup view of a statue of Humboldt by Paul Otto (1846-1893). Statue is shown below. From Wikipedia, "Friedrich Wilhelm Christian Carl Ferdinand von Humboldt (1767-1835) was a Prussian philosopher, linguist, government functionary, diplomat, and founder of Humboldt University of Berlin, which was named after him in 1949 (and also after his younger brother, Alexander von Humboldt, a naturalist)."   |

Between June 21 and November 17, 1967 Berlin issued a set of six stamps of different values showing cultural masterpieces in the city. The 30 pf value (Mi #305) was issued on November 17, and it depicts a close-up view of the wood-carved sculpture "Mark the Evangelist" by Tilman Riemenschneider. From artsandculture.google.com, "Sculpture was made in 1490-2 for the parish church of St. Maria Magdelena in Muennerstadt." And, from Wikipedia, "Tilman Riemenschneider (1460-1531) was a German sculptor and woodcarver active in Wuerzburg from 1483. He was one of the most active and versatile sculptors of the transition period between the Gothic and Renaissance, a master in stone and limewood."   |

This March 28,1966, 3 franc stamp of Belgium publicizes the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR). From Wikipedia, "The Royal Library of Belgium is the national library of Belgium. The library has a history that goes back to the age of the Dukes of Burgundy (Habsburg sovereigns of the Low Countries).
