Here is Spain's April 27, 1979, five peseta stamp (Sc #2146) publicizing UNESCO's "international Year of the Child." The stamp shows a child's drawing of a teacher and her students at the library.  |

On October 20, 1989 Finland issued this stamp (Facit #1096) to commemorate the centenary of the country's first two folk high schools, founded at Borga and Kangasala. Two upper torsos on a computer screen are superimposed on an open book.  |

In 1997, Ireland issued a three-part series of four-stamp sets to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Irish State. The second part/release of four stamps occurred on April 3, 1997. One of the 52 p stamps (Hib. #C797) of the second part highlights Irish literature and visual arts.  |

This small Dutch language cinderella advertises the Froede Stamp Catalog , "available everywhere." Partial Belgian cancel and prices in francs (f.) appear to indicate that this is a Flemish-Dutch label.  |

On November 26, 1985 the DDR issued this mini-sheet of 6 values (Mi #s 2987-92) to commemorate the birth bicentenary of the Brothers Grimm. Each of stamps shows an open book. The low value depicts the writers, and each of the others shows a story. 5 pf Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859) and Jacob Grimm (1785-1863) 10 pf 'The Valiant Tailor' 20 pf 'Lucky John' 25 pf 'Puss-in-Boots' 35 pf 'The Seven Ravens' 85 pf 'The Sweet Porridge'   |

Here is the 180 aur value (Facit #602) from Iceland's May 4, 1981 set of two EUROPA stamps on the theme of folklore. The stamp depicts Loftur the Sorcerer on his quest for the Raudskinna. From wikipedia, "Loftur Borsteinsson (1702 - ca. 1722) was an 18th century Icelander. He is known in Icelandic folklore as 'Galdra-loftur', a master of sorcery...According to the legend, (he) tried to obtain Raudskinna, the legendary book of spells which had been buried with the author Bishop Gottskalk grimmi Nikulasson of Hola. However he failed in that effort. Some time after he was, according to legend, dragged down from his fishing boat under the water and disappeared."  |

A boy reading is shown on this 15c Stamp (Sc # 277E) of Lithuania. It is from a set of eight stamps issued in September of 1933 for the benefit of Lithuanian orphans. All of these stamps were issued in both imperforate and perforated 14 formats.  |

On September 24, 1948 Bolivia issued a set of 10 stamps (2 x 5 designs) to commemorate the 3rd Pan American Conference of Catholic Education. The 2 bolivianos (Sc #326) and 3.70 bs values depict a child kneeling before the Cross of Golgotha.  |

On November 13, 1972 Nicaragua issued a set of 12 airmail stamps to commemorate 50 years of Interpol crime novels. Each stamp features a different writer and an image of his/her detective on the page of a book. All stamps are the same size and format, and with the same light blue border on the bottom and left. Shown here is the low value 5c stamp Sc #C801) from the set, featuring novelist Dorothy Sayers and her Lord Peter Wimsey character.  |

This September 20, 1940, 50c stamp (Sc #383) of Paraguay commemorates the centenary of the death of Dr. Jose Francia (1766-1840). From wikipedia, "Jose Gaspar Rodriguez de Francia y Velasco was a Paraguayan lawyer and politician, and the first dictator (1814-40) of Paraguay following its 1811 independence from the Spanish...His official title was 'Supreme and Perpetual Dictator of Paraguay', but he was popularly known as 'El Supremo'."  |
