The set of Australia's wartime prime ministers (SG1470-1474) from 1994, has signatures on each of the stamps. Perhaps Rodney could dig these out (the stamps, not the PMs).

What a dignified looking group of gentlemen.

On this Hungarian stamp, the signature of German poet and dramatist Friedrich von Schiller shoots out a Pegasus rearing from flames. Talk about a mighty pen!

The Australian set of Prime Ministers (above) could be considered as stamps on stamps, because the picture to the right of the portraits is actually of the Australian Armed Forces stamp issued in 1940, which was based on the Women's Weekly cover which Rodney has shown. You can see that the servicemen on the stamp are different to the ones on the magazine cover.
Arthur Fadden and Frank Forde might be considered accidental prime ministers.
Fadden was leader of the Country Party in coalition with the United Australia Party (led by Robert Menzies). When Menzies resigned in 1941 no-one in the UAP was considered capable of leading the government, so Fadden got the job. He only lasted 40 days before 2 independent members who had held the balance of power refused to support the Budget, so his government was forced to resign. When I was a kid Fadden was the federal treasurer in a later Menzies government.
Frank Forde became caretaker PM for only 8 days in 1945, between the death of John Curtain and the election of Ben Chifley as leader of the ALP. He is probably only remembered today as the answer to the trivia question - whose prime ministership was the shortest in Australian history?

John Heartfield (1891-1968), photomontage artist. Born Helmut Herzfeld, he chose to anglicize his name to Heartfield in 1916, to criticize the rabid nationalism and anti-British sentiment prevalent in Germany during World War I. Engraved by Margot Sachs-Bitzer.

German-born Brother Johann ("Juan") Adam Schwarz, Society of Jesus (1730-1767), was the director of the printing press at the Jesuit college at Ambato, and after 1760, at Quito, Ecuador. The Jesuits were expelled from Ecuador in 1767, and Schwarz died on the homeward voyage. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a portrait of Brother Schwarz and his signature, engraved and printed by Thomas De La Rue & Co., Ltd., and issued by Ecuador on August 27, 1956 for the bicentenary of the Ecuadorian printing press, Scott No. 609, SG No. 1070.

Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait, and the signature, of Finnish ethnologist and philologist Matthias Alexander Castrén (1813-1853), designed by Olavi Vepsäläinen, engraved by Reijo Achrén, and issued by Finland on December 2, 1963 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Castrén's birth, Scott No. 423, Facit No. 587.

Antoni Gaudí (Reus/Riudoms, 1852 - Barcelona, 1926). Architect, his best known work is the Basilica de la Sagrada Familia (Barcelona, 1882 - ?). His signature is placed on a drawing of the said temple issued on the stamp commemorative of the 150 anniversary ofGaudí.

Oh great - another topical idea I may not be able to resist! On the upside, no one will ever have to worry about seeing my unreadable signature on a stamp! Hmmm, maybe I'll just autograph some and put them in my album?
