Canada Sc# 599/600 Varieties

I'm looking for some current catalog values for these varieties. The previous owner has his own notes included and I was curious what the up to date info would be. I have a few of these stamps, to say the least, and IF, IIFF I ever HAD to part with any of my stamps, these may be amongst the first to go. (I've kept all the goodies for myself muahaha) anywho, back to the stamps...



Stamps above with notes reading " Plate 1 #599 No Tag" - I checked, they have no tag - he has noted $42 (at the time)



These ones marked 600 with "Tag" and an arrow pointing to the center of the very top edge. - I checked and tagging strip goes all the way up though (if that makes sense?)- he had marked $15
Now, as if I'm not being confused/confusing enough:


Top left- "No shadow in 3rd building", Top right- "Green outside border" 12 1/2 x 12 perf
the next one on the left has 3 arrows pointing towards the completly crooked border staggering in and out of the margin
the next one marked "FLO - now water line"
The rest are marked 11 x 11 and one more Plate 1 "No tag"

I believe the untagged is 600... so there may be a mixe up...but here's the detail you're looking for. It's the 2011 prices

OK curiosity-- HB is for Hi Brite paper correct? Is Hi Brite an actual brighter paper that floresces more under UV light? Or is Hi Brite simply a company name and I'm way off track. Never found this stamp very attractive for a hi value but definatly has the varieties to find.

If scans from a catalogue are posted on this site, wouldn't it be proper to give credit to the original source?

In this case, the Unitrade catalogue (where this was taken) specifically states on page 2:

"No part of this book may be reproduced in any form or by any means, electronic or mechanical, including photocopying, without permission in writing from The Unitrade Press."

I know that there have been other instances where portions of the Unitrade catalogue have been scanned and posted on this site (without permission I'm sure), but this is the first time I can recall where *NO* credit whatsoever was given.

Nitro as far as I've ever heard Hibrite means basically the highest
brightness in paper fluorescence when exposed to ultraviolet light.
Nothing to do with any paper company.

I don't know if this is the first time but I do believe

I'm not a copyright lawyer nor have any experience in this. I am not trying to get anyone into any kind of trouble. Just saying that if a scan from a book is posted, then at the very least suitable credit should be given.

The Unitrade catalogue notes the following major varieties:

* Scott 600 - original printing, perf 11, untagged ($8.00 for mint)
* Scott 599 - 2nd printing, perf 12.5x12, tagged ($3.50 for mint)
* Scott 599a - 3rd printing, perf 13.3, tagged ($3.50 for mint)

A ribbed paper variety exists on no. 600. There are also 'short $ flaw' and 'dot after postes' flaw varieties.

The used variety examples shown are most likely colour shifts that might be of interest to a specialist with a minimal premium depending on condition and cancellation.

From time to time I still use mint copies of this design as postage, so they really are still only 'worth' $1.

It is in fact from the Unitrade catalogue...I wanted to write everything down for Lux...then...well...the laziness came over me and the scanner was used....DAMN YOU LAZINESS!!

Aren't postage stamps copyrighted material?

In the past few decades, lots of countries have jumped on the copyright bandwagon and started to copyright their stamps.

For the US, reproduction of stamps since 1978 is governed by USPS copyright and also Treasury Department restrictions. Before then, USPS did not copyright its stamp issues.

In a nutshell, USPS allows you to reproduce images of stamps you are actually selling as long as you display the copyright notice. It falls under the category of Philatelic Advertising Use in their rules.

The Treasury Department rules govern the size of the reproduction. They cannot be the same size as the original unless defaced/demonetized/canceled. Reproductions of unused stamps must either be smaller than 75% or greater than 150% (linear size).

There are additional restrictions/allowances, but I don't think anybody really wants all those details. If somebody really wants to know, then post, and I will look up the 2 links to the rules. However, be forewarned -- one of the links is to a document that is several hundred pages long (no, I didn't read it all!).

Good to know these things, I'm going to take a few minutes to re-read the rules for this site so no trouble comes up.
