Hello everybody, I have a question about souviner stamp cards. Using the one scanned would this stam be considered a CTO, used or unused? It is only attached to the card at the bottom of the sheet. It sort of seems like it would be a CTO but I am not at all sure. Many thanks David

I think sometimes that terms get confused and people think that a thing is closer to something just because of the term or name used.
I would call this a commemorative cancel or postmark.
Just calling it cancelled to order (CTO) would not do it justice I feel.
Many CTO stamps have just the corner cancelled and leave most of the design clear.
This card and stamp is a good example of the newer European way of some countries to make collecting everything at once the norm rather than a hard to achieve thing. Commemorative card or envelope, stamp and matching cancel. Canada is doing this kind of thing also.
On this example, because of the almost perfect centering of the cancels, you do tend to lean towards calling it CTO but the nice design of the cancel leans more towards commemorative.
In my 2005 Stanley Gibbons GB Concise they list first day cancels of each issue after a certain date, occurring at different locations or special events. Quite the collecting area it is.
I mean, gee, if someone went to all the trouble of designing up a really nice cancel to complement the stamp's design then it does seem to go together.
Trouble is, for most collectors it is not mint and not really truly postally used. Well, the Post Office did cancel it but not in the regular course of posting it in the mails (or mailing it).
A topical collector would be attracted to such a combination perhaps. |

I agree with you Puzzler 100%.
How is this any different from a cancellation on a First Day Cover. Aren't all FDC canceled to order ? Most FDC are canceled days (weeks even) before the Day of Issue and sometimes after which basically makes a joke out of the term FIRST DAY COVER |

@Dave9911: Yes, only the SCF Family calls me bmauggie. ;o) No worries. Just trying to be funny. The impulse must come hand in hand with stamp collecting. |

Hello again, I am still confused about this topic. In the scan above this stamp has the original gum. If it were put on a cover would that change it from a possible CTO to used? Is it the gum that determinewhether it is a CTO or used? In the first two scans both are cancelled dead center like the above example. I would consider these used. If they were off cover with the original gum would they be considered a CTO? In the third scan these two stamps are cancelled in the corner. If they were off cover without the gum could they be considered used CTOs?I guess what I am asking is whether it has gum or depending on what it is attached to decide what it is? Thanks David |

A couple of these are event cancels (3 and 5). The others might be better called Favor Cancels maybe? Very nice fancy, specially designed cancels. |
