Ok I scanned these quick and realize there is a couple ceylon and a straits in the mix. Question-- is it common for the revs to be cut like some of these are? I would say half used but not being on pc or document I figure makes them pretty well useless. If anything else jumps off the page I'm all eyes.

Hi, the half stamps are India and Ceylon telegraph stamps and are not revenues. I believe they were cut in half and one half handed to the customer - I guess stuck to a receipt.

Thanks Nigel- so these would be considered acceptable rather than trash them. My first thought was someone was overly scissor happy and they would be garbage. I'm sure catalog values are not worthy but they will still at least fit somewhere.

I replied to this, too, but nigelc obviously has more pull with SCF, and overrode my contribution

As he says, the cut in half stamps are Telegraphs, and they were applied to the telegraph forms so that the top half of the stamp was returned to the sender. Here is a complete unused copy of a 1 Anna:

Incidentally, you might like to check the watermarks on your three Cochin stamps. The normal watermark is an upright small umbrella. A very few inverted watermarks are known (these stamps were printed by Perkins, Bacon, who did the Penny Black, and were usually pretty careful) and are well worth having.

Those 3 all have umbrella facing up and my others I can only make out a couple so the fluid will have to come out on the rest. Thanks as always for assistance.

On the 2 Anna Queen Victoria light blue stamps, is the CALCUTTA squared circle cancel a bit off? Oval shaped it seems to me here, skewed a bit somehow, late at night as it is and all.

Nice though. Nice to see the other cancels also.

Is this also true for Philippines revenues, that cut in half they are telegraph stamps? I just found one in a group of stamps and it is cut neatly in half; I have the right-hand half that is inscribed "Revenue" and "E Islands". The word(s) to the left of the "E" have been cut off. It is an orange 20 centavos stamped "JUL 19 1938" and overprinted/stamped "4065640" and was in a group of stamps marked "Philippines".

Any comments will be most welcome.
Donald

Further research allowed me to answer my own question. The half stamp I have is, I believe, a Philippines documentary revenue issued from 1934-41 in the Palm Tree design, is the right half of Warren number W637b with 7 overprinted digits 20-1/2 mm long, Type C, 2-1/2 mm wide, perf 11, 20 centavos.

Lehmann, Douglas K., "The Fiscal Stamps of the Philippines, the Warren Update", can be found on line.

Its great when old topics are brought up again. Especially when they answer a question I didnt really want to ask. I thought these were destined for the bin. Now they can stay where they are, for now.

Bumping this older topic. Here are my recent purchase of the Cut Revenues. One was even cut and punched. Interesting, and keepers.
