Tall Ships On Stamps

This 1996 stamp of Poland depicts the STS General Zaruski, a small sailing ship used in maritime training and education.

From the tallshipsnetwork.com website, "The importance of the STS General Zaruski for Polish sailing is huge, and the vessel is the last existing unit of its kind in Poland and one of the few in Europe. Wooden, traditional gaff ketch, on the initiative of General Mariusz Zaruski, was built in Sweden for the money coming from contributions of members of the Maritime and Colonial League."

On April 7, 2016 Germany issued this stamp depicting Ivory Frigate Carried by Neptune by Jacob Zeller. Zeller completed this piece shortly before his death in 1620. Rather than a tall ship photograph or painting, this is an actual ivory carving 110 cm. (43 3/8") in height. The work is housed in the Green Vault area of the Art Collection of the city of Dresden.

This Irish stamp (Sc. #665) depicts the paddle steamer Severn, named for the River Severn, the longest river in Great Britain.

The stamp is the lower value of a set of two issued on July 10, 1986 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the British and Irish Steam Packet Company (B & I).

On May 19, 1997 Finland issued a stamp booklet (Facit H35) commemorating the centenary of the founding of the Finnish Life-Boat Society. Booklet has one pane of six different stamps showing sailing ships.

2002 Netherlands

The 40 pf + 20 pf value (Mi. #545) of Berlin's April 14, 1977 set of 4 youth charity "ships" stamps depicts the SS Helena Sloman, which was powered by 3 masts and a single, 180 h.p. steam engine.

On March 19, 1999 Irelands issued a four stamp set of "Maritime History" stamps. The low value 30 p stamp (Hib. #C902) depicts the barque Polly Woodside.

This August 7, 2008 stamp (Mi. #2686) of Germany commemorates the 50th anniversary of the training vessel Gorch Foch.

From Wikipedia, "The Gorch Foch is a tall ship of the German Navy. She is the second ship of that name and a sister ship of the Gorch Foch built in 1933. Both ships are named in honor of the German writer Johann Kinau who wrote under the pseudonym 'Gorch Foch' and died in the battle of Jutland/Skagerrak in 1916...In January 2019, the (new) ship was reported to be in a 'completely dismantled' state."

So, the future of this three-masted barque is highly questionable, as the cost of repairs has been described as 'astronomical'.

Here is Finland's June 19, 1972 issue "commemorating this race between training ships of different countries, starting from Helsinki on 2 August, 1972" (Facit). The 1902 steel-hulled frigate Finland's Swan is shown on the stamp.
