I believe these are pretty good copies of an Athens Coarse Impression, but after that I don't know how to tell if it is Good, Bad Impression, Dirty or Clean Plates. No figure on back for pink (think Scott 56), but numbers on back for 20 bluish ultramarinish stamp Can someone help?? As always thanks - Jeff
Are there any real criteria for determining whether impressions are clear, unclear, fine, coarse etc.? I have always had difficulty with these issues from Greece and from Austria as to which printing I am actually looking at. Very much like colours, there are guidelines but much of it seems to come down to subjective opinion and experience.
I apologize if I seem to be hijacking this thread, but I am going to post a number of pictures here and would really, really like to hear anyone's idea of where distinctions appear. They are all from the A1 design, of 1861, and divided according to the presence or absence of Figures on the back. I used the examples in the Scott Catalogue for attempting to sort printings, but so many seem to have attributes of more than one of those pictures that my attempt to assign a Scott number has huge elements of guesswork involved.
