Anyone know what this might be? It is another discovery made in an old album I acquired a while back. I know the picture is awful - sorry - but this is the third attempt at it!
The "stamp" is imperf, there is no watermark, it is on medium thickness paper, the frame measures 16mm by 21.5 mm, there are two "value tablets" showing just 5 (no denomination), and even with a magnifying glass it is impossible to make out the wording, it is very blurred. The top part of the design looks vaguely Masonic to me. I know it's a long shot, but has anyone seen the like of it before?

Hi Dave, This is a Russian Civil War stamp issued by the Northern Army in 1919. SG lists it as North West Russia SG 1.

Nigel,
Thanks for this!
But, now I look under North West Russia, my stamp does not have the lettering "OKCA" as shown in the 1989 SOTW. The symbol on the top of my example is the same as in the centre of North West Russia SG1, so I am sure we are somewhere in the right area, but could this be a "private post" or some suchlike? Or is it just that my old generalised catalogue simply doesn't go into enough detail?

Hi David, The five stamps in the Northern Army set all have different designs and OKCA (OKSA in Cyrillic) appears in different styles on them. In your stamp it's in the centre and looks like a monogram with overlapping letters.

Thanks Dave, It's a pleasure to help.

Here are examples of the five values showing the different papers that were used:

The small writing under OKCA on your stamp says: Postage / Stamp / Five Kop / 1919

Great to see the whole set, thanks. Afraid my one example isn't as tidy as those, and I know it's not worth anything, but the history is the thing with an item like this, I always think. My confusion arose because in my old catalogue the only illustration was of the 50k green, and no mention of "different frames", which is what SG usually put in cases like this where the stamps in a set differ so much.
Thanks again
DavidR
