I believe "postfrimerk" means postage stamp, not free. It first appeared on the posthorn issue in 1877.

Hi jubilee, On askphil I looked for postfrim and it said postfrimaerki (Danish) free postage stamps--Norway, Denmark. It spells it as postfrimaerki so now I'm confused on the two different spellings.Any ideas?
Thanks
david

My understanding is that in Germanic language stamps "Freimark" and similar spellings originally referred to not having to have a license to purchase them (or not involving a license?).

Hi David,

postfrim. is an abbreviation for postfrimerke or postfrimærke.

Frimærke is the usual Danish word for stamp.

Frimerke is now the usual Norwegian word for stamp.

However, on the earliest Norwegian stamps it was spelt frimærke.
