I feel the same, Rod. The slant of the 'I' seems simply not possible. It would help to find a period 'GUILDFORD' cancel for comparison's sake, but so far I haven't had any luck finding one online.

I'm not ruling out the idea of a rare or closed post office. I found just such a cancel the other day - a NSW post office not apparently recorded anywhere. (In fact, in this case, the town doesn't even exist anymore!) So places like this certainly exist.

Does anyone know what this one is? It can't just be 'BUFFALO' as this would be asymmetrical. It can't be 'MOUNT BUFFALO' because ever since 1908 (I think) the PO there has been called 'MOUNT BUFFALO CHALET.'

Maybe it's just an old handstamp for "MT BUFFALO" that was still in use 25 years later?

It seems likely, I guess, Nigel!

All sorts of things are possible. For example, in this WA stamp, the relevant post office (Inglehope) was apparently not even operational at the time it was cancelled (1936):

According the PPA list, the Inglehope office closed on 31/8/1930 and reopened on 1/10/1937!

Can anyone work out either of these? They'll both almost certainly be NSW:

...MBALORY?

---OBONGLACHE--?

Seems likely to be Money Order Office Portland. I don't have one to confirm that, though.

[edit: I suppose I should say that I don't know that I have one. Lots to go through.]

Have you seen other cancels like this before, Cjd?

I'm pretty sure money order office cancels looked like the one shown here (Burnie, 1930) and were always in violent ink:

M.O.O. marks, absolutely. M.O.O. Portland, don't think so. It is only an educated guess. There is room for one more letter to balance out your cancel, and I've seen enough M.O.O.s to say it is probably an "M."

Didn't see your edit before replying. Money order office cancels definitely can be found as traditional-looking cds cancels, in black ink.

Thanks for the answers, Plateflaw, nigelc.

I'm constantly amazed by what people can work out!

Cjd, I've never seen M.O.O. cancels myself, so I was just asking you to clarify. Thanks for the help!
