On October 11, 1975 France issued this .70 fr stamp (Sc #1454) to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the creation of the Demining Service. The designers chose a depiction of French sculptor Joseph Riviere's (1912-1961) statue and monument to deminers killed in their work in post-WWII Alsace. From wikipedia, "His work is held in various public places in France. His best known work is the monument to the dead deminers of the Ballon d'Alsace (Alsatian mountain region)."   |

Here is the one centavo value (Sc #495) from El Salvador's 1924-5 "National Symbols" set of 10 stamps. Stamp depicts the Daniel Hernandez monument and statue from Daniel Hernandez Town Square in Santa Tecla, El Salvador. From wikipedia, "Hernandez, from whom the square receives its name, also contributed to the foundation and design of the streets of Villa Santa Tecla, which at the time was meant to be the ew capital of El Salvador."   |

This 30 groszy stamp (Sc #235) of Poland is from the 1925-7 definitive series of 11 values. Stamp depicts the Jan III Sobieski (King John II Sobieski 1629-1696, reigned 1674-96) statue in Lwow, Poland (now Lviv, Ukraine). Photo shows recent view of the statue in Gdansk. Stamp cancellation is Ciechanow, in north central, present day Poland. From lia.livcenter.org, "The grand opening of the monument to the King of Poland took place on November 20, 1898. The monument was made by the famous Lviv sculptor Tadeusz Barancz. After World War II, in 1950, the monument was moved to Poland where for almost 20 years it was located in Wilanowski Park in Warsaw while discussion continued about its appropriate location. In 1987 the monument Jan III Sobieski was ceremonially unveiled in Wooden Market in Gdansk."   |

On December 15, 1948 Cuba issued an eight-stamp set commemorating the centenary of the birth of freedom fighter General Antonio Maceo (1845-1896). The one cent value (Sc #423) of this set depicts a close-up view of the bronze equestrian statue of Gen. Maceo in Havana. The statue was created in 1916 by Italian sculptor Domenico Boni (1886-1917). From loc.gov, "General Antonio Maceo Grájales was second-in-command of the Cuban army of independence. Commonly known as "the Titan of bronze", Maceo was one of the outstanding guerrilla leaders in nineteenth century Latin America."   |

This April 14, 1993 20 p value (Sc #558) of the Isle of Man is from a set of four EUROPA stamps showing contemporary art by Bryan Kneale (b. 1930). Stamp depicts Kneale's bronze statue of British/Manx novelist and playwright Sir Hall Caine (1853-1931) in Summerhill Gardens, Douglas, I.O.M.  |

Here is the DDR's June 21, 1988 strip of two values with label (Mi #W Zd 754) commemorating the 10th Youth Stamp Exhibition in Chemnitz. The 20 pf value shows a ca. 1620 view of Chemnitz and the 50 pf stamp shows a contemporary, edited skyline of the city including the Karl Marx monument. From wikipedia, "The Karl Marx monument is a 7.10 meters tall stylized head of Karl Marx in Chemnitz, Germany...After renaming the city and the district of Chemnitz Karl-Marx-Stadt on May 10, 1953 for Karl Marx Year, the East German government decided to honor the namesake of the city, and hired Soviet sculptor Lev Kerbel to design a monument." The bronze head was cast in 95 pieces and was welded together by VEB Germania. Monument was opened on October 9, 1971.    |

This August 29, 1947 5c airmail stamp (Sc #C281) of Nicaragua is from the Country Images pictorial definitive series. Stamp depicts the Ruben Dario (1867-1916) monument in Managua. Dario was an influential poet, journalist and diplomat. From gpsmycity.com, "The monument of Ruben Dario is in the park near the Plaza de Revolucion. The monument commemorates the famous poet, a leader of the modernism movement that characterizes Latin American literature."   |

On April 7, 1960 Iceland issued a two-stamp set of identically-designed stamps to commemorate the United Nations Organization's World Refugee Year. The stamp designer used an artist's rendering of Icelandic sculptor Einar Jonsson's (1874-1954) bronze statue The Outlaw (1901) as the image for the stamp. The higher value 4.50 kr stamp (Facit #375) is shown here.   |

Here is the 17 centavos value (Sc #407) from El Salvador's 1912 definitive set of 10 stamps. Stamp depicts the Gerardo Barrios equestrian statue in San Salvador. From wikipedia, "The monumental statue in the center of the plaza, dedicated to president Gerardo Barrios, was made by Francisco Durini and inaugurated in 1909. The statue, cast in bronze, shows an equestrian statue of the military leader. The statue is placed on a pedestal of granite that shows battle scenes cast in bronze and the coat of arms of El Salvador."   |

Japan World Heritage III March 23, 2007 Gyuba-doji statue stands at Hashiori Pass on the Kumano Sankei Route in the Kii Mountain Range. The 19th century stone statue depicts a child on the back of a cattle and a horse.  |
