The Federal Republic of Germany has issued at least two different stamps depicting the bronze equestrian statue of Johann Wilhelm II (erected 1711) in Duesseldorf. Johann Wilhelm II (1658-1716), Elector Palantine, of the Wittelsbach dynasty, was a prolific collector of the paintings of Peter Paul Rubens. His collection is now housed at the Alte Pinakothek (Museum) in Munich. The bronze statue in Duesseldorf was designed by Gabriel de Grupello (1644-1730) a Dutch/Flemish sculptor. The first stamp (Mi #423) was issued on October 24, 1964. It is one of twelve designs from the BRD's 1964-5 State Capitals series. The artwork is a stylized, but it is an effective representation of the statue. The second stamp (Mi #1369) was issued on May 5, 1988. It shows some historic buildings of the city, as well as the equestrian statue. |

Hello. The Stamp Fair is held annually in the Higher Square of Madrid, where every Sunday markets for stamps, coins and other collectibles are held under the arcades. In the center (almost) the equestrian statue (bronze) of King Felipe III is located. On 04-19-2018 this block was issued commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Fair. The face value of the stamp is $ 6.03 and almost all emissions are high values, which has made many Spaniards flee from collecting stamps of Spain. Regards. |

Here is the 10 (pf) value (Mi #2929) from the DDR's March 5, 1985 two-stamp set commemorating the Leipzig Spring Fair. Stamp depicts the statue of J.S. Bach outside of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, but with a solid green background replacing the church/city scene. This new Bach monument was completed/placed in 1906. From de.zxc.wiki, "On a 3.20 meter high limestone plinth is a 2.45 high bronze statue designed by the Leipzig sculptor Carl Seffner (1861-1932) and cast by the company Noack & Brueckner." The Federal Republic of Germany's rendition of this Bach statue (as a definitive stamp) can be seen on page 21 of this thread. |

On October 28, 1969 the DDR issued a set of two stamps to commemorate the National Stamp Exhibition in Magdeburg. The lower value 20 (pf) stamp (Mi #1513) of the set features a view of sites in Magdeburg, including the 1907 monument to native son Otto von Guericke (1602-1686). Von Guericke was a scientist and diplomat, and he also served as Lord Mayor of Magdeburg from 1646 to 1676. The bronze statue at the monument was created by sculptor Carl Friedrich Echtermeier (1845-1910). |
