Statues On Stamps

Here is the 3.20 kroner value (Facit #1112) of Norway's June 7, 1991, two-stamp set publicizing Nordic Tourism. The stamp depicts the Fountain in the Vigeland Installation at Frogner Park in Oslo. The Fountain was the first sculptural unit in the park during the installation from the late 1920's to early 1940's.

The Youth of Agde (l'Éphèbe d'Agde) is a bronze statue discovered in 1964, on the bed of the river Herault on the south-eastern coast of France, by Denis Fanquerle and divers from the Agde Marine Archaeological Research Group. It is probably associated with an ancient Greek shipwreck.

On May 23, 1957 Finland issued this 30 markka value (Facit #481) to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the of the country's one-chamber parliament. The stamp depict's sculptor Walter Runeberg's (1838-1920) bronze sculpture Lex (Law, 1894) which is one of four works at the base of his Alexander II statue in Senate's Square, Helsinki.

This March 4, 1996, 16 fr stamp (Sc #941) of Luxembourg commemorates the birth centenary of Grand Duchess Charlotte (1896 - 1985). The stamp is a photographic image depicting the statue of the Grand Duchess. It is located at the Grand Ducal Palace in Luxembourg City, where it was placed on April 16, 1990. Statue was designed by French sculptor Jean Cardot.

Here is Luxembourg's September 20, 1993, 14 Fr stamp (SC #902) commemorating the 75th anniversary of the death of Jean Schortgen (1880-1918). Schortgen was a worker who was elected to Luxembourg's Chamber of Deputies (Parliament). Stamp depicts the Miner Statue at the Schortgen Monument at the cemetery of Tetange.

On July 12, 2007 Germany and Latvia jointly issued sets of two stamps featuring UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the two countries. Shown here is the German 65 c value (Mi #2614) featuring the House of the Blackheads in Riga. On the left and right sides of this stamp are the Neptune and Mercury statues appearing on the front of the House of the Blackheads. The building on the stamp cannot show the four statues clearly; they appear as small, dark gray streaks halfway up the building.

The sculptures were made by the workshop of August Volz...The building was bombed to a ruin by the Germans on June 28, 1941 and the remains were demolished by the Soviets in 1948. The building and its details, including the statues are all replicas of the originals.

Here is Finland's March 31, 1979 1.10 markka stamp (Facit #842) commemorating the 750th anniversary of Turku. Stamp depicts the 2.95 meter (9.68 ft) tall bronze statue of Per Brahe and Turku Cathedral.

Three of the values (Mi #s 3345-7) from the DDR's last definitive series, "Buildings and Monuments" (1990), depict statues as a part of the famous monuments. The 30 pf stamp, showing The Goethe and Schiller statue by Ernst Rietschel (1804-61) can be seen on another stamp on page 22 of this thread. Likewise, The Quadriga, atop the Brandenburg Gate, can be seen on another stamp on page 23 of this thread.

The 60 pf value, shown here, depicts the Kyffhaeuser Monument near Bad Frankenhausen in Thuringia. It was dedicated to kings Frederick I (Frederick Barbarossa) and William I, the first kaiser of the modern, unified Germany. The monument was completed in 1896, and it contains statues of each of the kings. The bronze William I equestrian statue by Emil Hundrieser (1846-1911) can be plainly seen on the stamp. The size of the statue can be estimated by comparison to the two people in the lower left corner of the photo. The Frederick I sandstone statue by Nikolaus Geiger (1849-97) sits in the alcove beneath William I, and is not visible on the stamp.

On August 9, 1956 Berlin issued this 25 pf stamp (Mi #147) as a part of its Berlin Buildings II definitive series. Stamp depicts the Flight statue atop the Lilienthal Monument in Lichterfelde, Berlin. Otto Lilienthal (1848-1896) was an aviation pioneer sometimes referred to as the "glider king."

This May 15, 1985, 1.50 (+ 8.50 mk) semi-postal stamp (Facit #961) of Finland was issued in conjunction with the NORDIA Stamp Exhibition held in Helsinki on May 15-19, 1985. The 8.50 markkas represents the entrance fee to the stamp show; the stamps were only sold at the show, with attendees receiving the stamp with receipt/ticket.

The stamp depicts the Havis Amanda "Mermaid" statue and fountain in the Market Square of Helsinki. An earlier posting on this thread (p. 28) shows a close-up photo of the statue.

This 1 DM stamp (Mi #153) was issued by Berlin on November 10, 1956 as a part of its Berlin Buildings II definitive series. Stamp depicts the bronze equestrian statue of Friedrich Wilhelm I (1620-1688) who is known as "The Great Elector" because of his military and political achievements. The statue is located outside of the Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin.

Here is another stamp from Berlin's Berlin Buildings II series. The 40 pf value (Mi #149) depicts a view of Charlottenburg Palace and the left side of its gate with the statue of a Greek warrior holding a sword and a shield.

The second pic/photo shows that the designers took some liberties with their stamp image. The bronze equestrian statue of Friedrich Wilhelm I is missing, as is the right side of the gate with the second warrior statue. This gives a clearer, but unreal picture of the palace.

The bronze statue by Gustav Vigeland honors the Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel (1802-1829).

On January 12, 1995 Germany issued this 80 pf stamp (Mi #1772) to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of the city of Gera. Stamp depicts various churches and buildings of Gera, and the "Simsonbrunnen" (Samson Fountain).

After it was badly damaged by a terrible storm in 1930, the statue was replaced and re-erected in 1932. It was replaced again in 1979.
