Two of the values of the USA's Americana definitive series depict details of the iconic Statue of Liberty. The 12c stamp (Sc #1594) was issued on April 8, 1981 and gives a view of the torch in its present, updated form. The 16c value (Sc #1599) shows Liberty's face, in a vague fashion lacking any details. It was issued on March 31, 1978. Regarding the torch, nps.gov says, "The Statue's current replacement torch added in 1986, is a copper flame covered in 24k gold. It is reflective of the sun's rays in daylight and lighted by 16 floodlights at night." The previous torch (1916) was a network of glass and copper bands which leaked and caused damage to Liberty's arm. |
