Statues On Stamps

Mercure chevauchant Pégase ("Mercury Mounted on Pegasus," 1701-1702) is a marble statue created by French sculptor Antoine Coysevox (1640-1720). Here is an image of "Mercury, Messenger of the Gods," an airmail stamp depicting this statue, designed and engraved by Gilbert Aufschneider, and issued by Central African Republic on December 5, 1965 to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the country's admission to the UPU, Scott No. C32, plus a photo of Coysevox's statue on display in the Louvre, Paris, France.

A jacquemart (also spelled "jaquemart") is a clock automaton featuring a figure (or figures), carved in wood or metal, which indicates the hours by striking a bell with a hammer. Colombia 2013 Statue of The Naked Bolivar, sited in the city of Pereira. The stamp shows only the upper portion of the statue, whereas the man is riding on a horse. The image used here is a mirror image of the actual statue - an intentional error?

Mazu (literally, "Mother-Ancestor") is the Chinese goddess of the sea who is said to protect fishermen and sailors. The worship of Mazu began in the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD). According to legend, as a terrible typhoon was raging, the mortal girl Lin Moniang slipped into a trance and thereby saved her father and brothers, who were fishermen, from drowning. After Lin Moniang's death while still a young woman, she was believed to forever roam over the seas as the goddess Mazu. Mazu is widely worshiped in the southeastern coastal regions of China, Taiwan, and elsewhere in East and Southeast Asia. In total, there are around 1,500 Mazu temples in 26 countries of the world. In sculpture, Mazu is always represented as clothed in the jeweled robes of an empress, holding either a ceremonial tablet or a jeweled staff, and wearing a flat-topped imperial cap with hanging beads at the front and back. India Catalina (c. 1495-?) was an indigenous woman who served as interpreter and intermediary for Spanish conquistador Pedro de Heredia (c. 1505-1554) during his conquest of Colombia.
