I've been looking through my collection of South African cancels, but am having difficulty identifying this pair. The first one, which dates from the '60s, has a name ending in 'ARIDGE,' but there is apparently no post office in South Africa with a name ending in 'ARIDGE' today. There is location in Natal called Claridge, but it seems to be a very small place, probably no more than a hamlet, and I can find no evidence to suggest that it has ever had a post office. Presumably this is the name of a place whose post office has closed. Does anyone know what it is?

This is the other one. Dating from the '70s, this also seems to come from a place which no longer has a post office.

All assistance would be greatly appreciated!

....strange things happen near the village of happiness
(here add sound of scary music)

Margate hit the world headlines in 1922 (although this date is often disputed and stated as 1924) when an enormous, white, furry creature (dubbed "Trunko" due to it having an elephantine trunk) was washed up on the beach. Unfortunately the "Margate monster" was too decomposed to be identified accurately.

I used to go to Margate for summer holidays, I do miss sandy beach holidays.

Never saw Trunko though

StampStudy, I thought it might have been Claridge too, but I couldn't find any information to indicate there was ever a post office there. If you use Google Earth, Claridge seems to be a farm or a hamlet - not even a village. Certainly, there is no post office there now. However, there must have been one there in the past. Perhaps the location was more important a few decades ago.

This is the best map of the locality I could find online:

As far as Village of Happiness is concerned, I think you have to be correct there. Like Claridge, it's also in KwazuluNatal. It doesn't have a post office now, but could well have done (must have done!) in the past.

Thanks so much for the input!

I will see if I can dig up any further info - and will keep an eye out for similar post marks on stamps from the same period.

Thanks, Drew!

BTW there seems to be a dearth of information about South African postal history online. If you know of any good online resources, please post links. I'm sure there are members of this forum besides myself who'd be interested.
