Well, the reason for showing it, was more the history behind the cinderella, tan for the design itself. As for my holiday trip. I went to Brussels, Flanders and Southern Netherlands up to Amsterdam. Nothing exotic at all, and quite near home for not European standards (1300-1500 km). But, anyway, it was interesting. I saw in Brugge a philatelic exhibition of part of the stamp collection of H.H. the Prince Albert of Monaco with wonderful items of Postal History of the principality. But what I liked most, was a very interesting exhibition on postal history of Brugge. |

The capital of the inner Catalonia, is Lleida, a very old city (Julius Caesar is said to have won a battle there by 50 BC) famous for its sweet fruits. Two cinderellas issued in 1967 and 1968 for the Fruit's Saint Michael Fair. Both are written in the, then compulsory, Spanish language. Thus, the name of the city becomes "Lerida" instead of the correct Catalan Lleida. |

We keep on issuing more cinderellas. These three have been designed by a friend of mine (Bernardino Mota) for the Artesa de Segre Melon Fair and for the 2nd Stamp Exchange Meeting; both celebrated on that town, last Sunday August 26th, 2012. |

Very nice cinderella issued in May 1955 by the Lleida Philatelic and Numismatic Club to promote their first school philately competition, held in Lleida between May 12 and 14 1955. On the background of the cinderella and on the postmark it can be seen "la Seu Vella" or Old Cathedral (13th century), the most prominent Lleida landmark; occupied by the Spanish army when they stormed the city in 1707 after a fiery Catalan resistance, it was on the Spanish army hands up to 1950. Now, restored, it's a museum. As it was compulsory by 1955, everything is written in Spanish. Although Catalan was the language of teachers and pupils. |

Thank you very much Rod.
The items shown by Malamute, are circa 1900 Catalan Nationalist cindis. The 1st, 3rd and 4th series urge Catalonia to step forward; while the 2 nd one pays tribute to Wilfred the Hairy, first hereditary count of Barcelona and one of the fathers of Catalan Nationhood.
Just yesterday, two of the Wilfred the Hairy towns, proclaimed themselves "freed from the Spanish yoke".
As I said before, you've seen nothing but a fraction of the Catalan Nationalist cinderellas. |

I see the connection now, your flag is Wilfred's bloodied fingers drawn down a copper shield. Nice Touch.

Well done Rod! But it's, actually, a golden shield.
There's a 17th century legend that says, that, 9th century Count Wilfred (Guifré in Catalan) after having helped the French king Charles II to defeat the Norsemen, was lying injured in bed. On the king's visit, he complained for having just an empty golden shield. To this, the king answered by soaking his four fingers into Wilfred's blood and drawing four strips on the shield; thus giving him arms of his own blood. Wilfred's arms, became Barcelona County ones, and from it, to Catalonia. The call it "Les Quatre Barres" (The Four Rods). Nice history but, sorry, just a tale. Actually, Catalonia's arms and flag date from the 12th century, making them one of the oldest flags/arms in Europe. |

1901 Art Nouveau Catalan Nationalist Cinderella with a hand drawing Catalan arms, surrounded by oak leaves, the symbol of strength, also on Mediterranean countries. |
