Hi to all

These were all in the estate collection I purchased.

Regards

These are called an "omnibus" series

there are 164 stamps in the set

3 years ago, I walked past a set in an auction for $20
(on a bourse table alongside the auction room)
a few minutes later, I said to myself hang it, I'll snap that up,
turned around and they were sold.

In stanley gibbons specialised they are listed

The 164 stamps mentioned in the back of the SG British Commonwealth catalogues include all Victory stamps issued by Commonwealth countries. Many of them bear no resemblance to the ones shown above, e.g. Australia brought out a set of 3 different stamps (SG213-215), and New Zealand brought out a set of 11 different stamps (SG667-677).

Yes, you are right to bring this to our attention.

But all are considered "Victory" issues, but should not be
considered "omnibus" (ergo, as being of like format)

Shall we leave it to you to contact Stanley Gibbons :) hehe

I have always liked that Hyderabad Issue,

"Post and Receipt" is a curious divergance from the norm "revenue"

Can you spot the error in the Hyderabad vignette?

Scott lists the Common Design Types for various empires, commonwealths, etc., including (in the Classic edition), the Jubilee, Coronation, Peace, Silver Wedding, U.P.U. and University issues.

Scott notes at the end of each design listing those issues that are considered part of the omnibus set, but that differ in design from the common design type. It is very useful. (The University set doesn't have any varying designs, but the rest of the sets have several to many varying designs.)

I've probably asked this before, and it has probably been answered before, but, it seems that Great Britain and the dominions don't generally issue the common design types. If they issue anything at all, it is a varying design. Is this policy based, or just reflective of greater resources for stamp design and production?

Cjd, I have no evidence one way or the other, but I'd think it would be cheaper for a colony like, say, Montserrat to adopt a common Crown Agents' design than go it alone. I wouldn't be surprised if the common designs were a Crown Agents initiative.

Rod, 'Post & Receipt' was how Hyderabad phrased it:

And are you alarmed at the thought of the sepoy returning home with his trusty .303? Hyderabad sent a contingent of State troops to the War. Goodness knows, unlikely as it seems, perhaps the Nizam decided to let his troops keep their guns.

Spot on, your Highness.
No, troops do not return home with their Lee-Enfields,
they are returned to the armoury.

Let's put this down to artistic licence
it gets the message across.

( I had gold "cross rifles" embroidered on the sleeve
of my naval uniform, I was a crack shot with the .303,
I also had to once "double" (run) around a parade ground
with the blessed thing above my head for speaking out of turn.
I can tell you they are rather heavy so and so's)

Nice touch, an official-non official, se-tenant.

I will not be able to view this stamp again,
without seeing the "floating boy" :)
