Maybe someone knowledgeable would share his/her opinion about the stamp on the left.Is this the #57 with good(not forged)cancels? 2006 Scott values it 325USD in used condition and in mint state .70 I've got a gut feeling it is the cto one ....

kmncd, I think your stamp is actually #47, which catalogs 30c. I think the colored paper is much more pronounced on both sides, like the yellow paper image displayed in the catalog.

It's strange how often the postmarks on these stamps that are rare and expensive turn out to be Jerusalem ones. It's the same with the ones in my collection. I assume they're all CTO or faked but I have no evidence for this.

By the way I do wish catalogues would stop using the description "Post office in Crete" for the French currency stamps used in the Austro-Hungarian Post Offices in the Turkish Empire. These stamps were used across the Turkish Empire and not specially in Crete. The majority of the Austro-Hungarian Post Offices stamps I have that have been used in Crete have the Turkish currency.

nigel, do you have a feel for whether the dates vary on the Jerusalem cancels? Or, are they strategically placed so as to never leave a date?

kmncd-Unfortunately, I think you are right.

The difference between a mint 57(.60), and a used 57 ($500) would clearly attract the CTOers.

The color does look rose, rather than scarlet to me. A CTOer might have thought the same thing, and put three nicely placed corner cancels not obliterating the portrait image. But as noted by Bee See, the rose paper looks superficial rather than colored straight through.

BTW, I really like the Emperor Franz Josef stamp design used on Austrian semi-postal, "Offices in Crete", and "Offices in the Turkish Empire" stamp issues. Nice stamps!
