I am trying to take a census. On Space Shuttle Mission STS-8 NASA flew space covers on the flight. After the flight, NASA destroyed all the unflown covers and made a list of the unflown cover serial numbers that were on the back of the cover. The cover I question has all three cancellations on the front and was sold as flown with serial #149734 on back but serial number is on the UNFLOWN cover list. I know some covers that were flown were missing one or all of the cancellations. I am trying to determine if this cover is the only one sold as flown but in the unflown cover list? If anybody wants to see a scan of the cover, email me directly.

John, is the list available online? I purchased three covers from the USPS which were said to have been flown and I'd like to check their numbers against the unflown list.

Edit:

Mission accomplished -- all were flown. Thanks, John!

John,

I wasn't aware there was an "unflown" cover list. FWIW here's mine. It was sold by the USPS as flown.

Experienced stamps need a home too. I'd rather have an example that is imperfect than no example.

Cover was flown. Go to www.collectspace.com and click on resources. You can save the pdf to your hard drive.

I have 21470.

I wonder, with the list of covers destroyed, if these all had Scott 1909 affixed when destroyed. That would be a rather significant portion of the printing destroyed.

I also noted in the letter that the USPS admitted to a small probability of error in the list. This might account for your cover which is not on the list as having been flown.

Hi John. You mention that your #149734 has the three cancels on the front, but you do not mention whether is has the fourth cancellation on the lower back - the one that says "RETURNED TO EARTH EDWARDS AFB, CA SEP 5 1983" If it does not then my thought would be it would most likely be one of the unflown.
