Thanks

I posted this thread today after receiving these stamps in the mail. I could not for the life of me remember where I had bid on this set. I thought I had gotten it on delcampe. I could not wait to post such a beautiful set of stamps on this forum to share with everybody. Then I saw an old thread and saw where I and many others got this great set from. So this thread was kind of pointless. Thank you for this great set Parf14. It is my second set of these and these are my favorite Ethiopia stamps.

I'm reviving this thread as I have a question about the 1930 Haile Selassie Coronation set.

Mainly, how does one tell the originals from the reprints?

Here are a few from the set that is in my album....

Scott 215 & 216 3t green & 5t red brown

Scott says the colors for the reprints are more yellow, the ink is thicker and glossier, while the ink on the originals is dull and granular.

I'm thinking I have reprints, but frankly, I'm not sure. Anyone have some experience with this?

Scott's has a note about the reprints.
"Reprints of Nos. 232-236, 2380240 are on thinner and whiter paper than the originals. On originals the ink is dull and granular. On reprints, heavy caked and shiny. Value 20c each."
Don't know if that helps.

I guess that means your 3t (#340) yellow green has a chance at being an original or reprint, but you 5t (SC#341) is likely original. It's not mentioned in the Scott's note.
Perhaps you could compare the ink to each other?

Thanks jamesw. I think you are referring to the 1931 set ( Scott 232-241), while I'm talking about the 1930 set ( Scott 210-216).

It would be great if someone had both the original and the reprint, so they could be compared. I have a suspicion that my stamps are the reprint set.

Oops, sorry. Found it then proceeded to transcribe the wrong one. Maybe it's time to go to bed.
Though the description of the inks is similar.

They are indeed. A problem I'm having with Ethiopia is the 1919 set, the 1930 set, the 1931 set, and the 1931 Air Post set all had reprints.

For the 1919 set, Scott says the original has white gum, while the reprints have brownish gum.

1919 Scott 126 6g light blue & orange "gum" comparison.

I'm calling the upper an original, while the lower a reprint.

Fools rush in.....
