Hi,

I have this cover:

The cover is postmarked Leeds on 17 August 1975 and was sent to Sweden from the UK with 10½p worth of Machins, all of which are perfins "LC".

I cannot tell who the sender was but the receiver is a Swedish museum.

The cover is marked "T 8½ over FS 10½" which I presume is a postage due marking.

The Swedish label seems to say that the excise(customs duty?) due is 210 ore and needs to be paid in stamps?

The cover is large measuring around 253mm wide by 178mm high. I do not think the contents very very thick though. Probably no more than a few pages of paper I'd guess.

A few questions: The perfin "LC" would that probably refer to Leeds City in this instance?

Second question: can anyone help me with deciphering the postage due marking and how to rate this cover. I have been all over my GB postal rates book and cannot make it work.

Third question: Could anyone help me understand the label the Swedes added?

Thanks and I appreciate the help here.

-Larry

Hi Larry,

Yes, this "LC" perfin will be for Leeds Corporation, i.e. the local government organisation for the City of Leeds.

Nigel,

Thanks. I had read that the LC perfin tends to depend on the postmark. If it is from Lincoln, than the LC stands for Lincoln Corporation, or from London, then London Corporation, etc etc. And, that in fact, the LC perfin is a pretty common one given all the GB locations that could fit the code.

The LC perfin comes in various sizes and spacing. There are around 17 different
LC perfins listed in the UK. Feel safe that the one you have is that of Leeds
Corp. Some of the other "corporate" users are: Lancaster, Leicester, Leigh, Lewisham, Leyton, Lindsey, Llanelli, Loughborough and Luton (no London). They are also used by 4 boroughs, and several businesses. Hope this helps somewhat.

In regards to the Swedish label: Not being able to read it very well, the big print loosely translates to "ransom 210 Ore" (Ore being the curreny). I would guess that this item was being charged a duty fee by the Swedish PO. or, "you get the book when you give use 210 Ore payment". If you could get a better scan of the label, we might be able to verify that. I note that the package looks like it had been opened on the left side by the PO and then labelled over, for the Customs check.

PoStat4evR,

Thanks very much. I have isolated the two labels and these are a bit clearer:

Google Language Tools translates the first as "ransom 210 cents Note amount will be reported with stamps on the consignment" which I take as a customs duty assessment and the second, on the left side of the cover translates as "ransom coated item" which I suspect really means "excise sealed"

Any further insight into this cover would be much appreciated.
