It's one of those classic compromises: You can't have large size and high power at the same time without increasing the cost a LOT or accepting lower quality. I would not buy one without testing it unless I was familiar with the model's performance. To test them, look for fine details in stamps, yes, but also move the glass over a stamp, or group of stamps (as we often do looking for varieties) and watch for the image to "roll" under the glass. It's very hard on the eyes and a common flaw in inexpensive optics of all kinds - called field curvature. I'm sure there are other high quality glasses besides Zeiss - but they're hard to find. When I got mine, however, the Internet was just a baby, so it's a lot easier now. But you still have to know that the one you're considering offers the quality you want. You get what you pay for.

5X ? Doesn't seem very strong. Mine is 10X and at times I wish it was stronger, which is why I own a scanner.

Or you can just use this on-line tool

There are a number of smartphone applications that will allow you to use the built in camera as a magnifying glass.
