MARCHE AUX TIMBRES

In the late nineteenth century, a rich Parisian Landowner bequeathed a plot of land to the city of Paris.
The land was near the Elysee Palace just off the Champs Elysee.
The rich landowner was a Philatelist and his one condition for giving away the land was that part of it be used for the benefit of Stamp Collectors.
From that day in 1887 to this, a Stamp Market has been held in the same place thrice weekly, even during the two world wars.
Anyone can go along, set up a table and sell stamps and other collectables.
Usually there are about 50 such sellers each Thursday,Saturday and Sunday each week throughout the year.
In May, a bigger weekend Market is held with upwards of 200 international sellers.

And all due to the generosity of a rich Parisian Landowner.

I will have the pleasure of visiting this market and it's beautiful setting a week on saturday. It may well be the highlight of my holiday.

Very interesting. Too bad you don't hear much about people doing things like that here in the states.

London - I actually got to go there twice, when I was about 13 and 14. I was overwhelmed with the number of stalls selling stamps. At that time (1963 or so) they were all outside. Take a lot of cash, because I have a feeling you're going to need it.

Have fun!

We don't have anything even close to that around here. There is only 1 overpriced dealer and no clubs. That is why I was so excited to find this forum. Now I get to show off some of my collection to other people who are interested. My wife thinks I'm crazy and everytime it buy something she says "Oh that's nice"

I walked through the Market to take a few pics. There were not as many dealers as I expected but was told Sunday was usually the busier day with many more selling and buying.

There looked to be some nice stuff on offer but I had my wallet stolen the night before and was in no mood for anything.

I was looking forward to spending some of my hard earned pocket money at this market but in the end it wasn't to be.

Another year maybe.........

Here are some pics.

Bandicoot,
I also needed a towel.
Both for wiping away the drool at the stamps I couldn't buy, and for wiping away the tears for my stolen stamp money !!

Londonbus1.....Wonder what I did with the towel

How frustrating. All those stamps just waiting to be bought and you don't have a penny (or franc) in your pocket. Thanks for pics.
