Just back from a lovely evening at the stamp club. A kindly elderly gentleman (most of them are) named Norm cornered me and said he'd read my collecting profile and had something for me.
Out of his briefcase he pulled these.

Hello! I said to myself. And of course I had to buy them from him.
So. What do our cinderella experts say? World War I era, doubt.
On the back of each is printed

Published by WINOX LTD.
Richmond, Surrey, England
wwc

There certainly is a haunting quality about them. Certainly the subject matter, but also the beautiful elegance with which they've been executed. No?

Very nice cinderelas indeed James.
I'd suggest propaganda labels, for the war effort,
conscription was introduced, even when there was no call for it,
hordes of patriotic men were signing up "for the scrap".

Edith Cavell : wiki

Edith Louisa Cavell ( /#712;kćv#601;l/; 4 December 1865 – 12 October 1915) was a British nurse and spy. She is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from all sides without distinction and in helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during World War I, for which she was arrested. She was court-martialled and found guilty of treason. She was sentenced to death and shot by firing squad. She received worldwide sympathetic press coverage.

She is well-known for her statement that "patriotism is not enough." Her strong Anglican beliefs propelled her to help all those who needed it, both German and Allied soldiers. She was quoted as saying, "I can't stop while there are lives to be saved".[1] Cavell was also an influential pioneer of modern nursing in Belgium.

Fascinating stuff. Here's an article from American Numismatic Society about the era, illustrated with a couple of these and some coins (of course)

http://ansmagazine.com/Spring06/Cavell

I shall read it in more depth tomorrow, it's getting late.
Edith Cavell is quite the heroine here in Canada. Many schools bare her name, and of course there's Mount Edith Cavell (as pictured on SC#117)

Perfect, Rileysan. Thanks for posting the picture. I actually don't have one, and that is a lovely example. Beautiful centering.
