During my genealogy, stamp and cover research, I encounter locations from villages up to countries which no longer exist. I can usually identify a location through a search on the net. Once I find a description, I would like to visually see where it is. One source I use is the David Rumsey Map Collection http://www.davidrumsey.com/
This site allows you to peruse many old maps.

Thanks for the tip. I look for lost lands all the time with my genealogy. Already bookmarked!
