This is not an area of collecting I intended to get in to, but these sort of fell in my lap this past weekend. Can anyone tell me more about these? What are they worth? I paid $25/ea

Brian

A quick look-up on the internet suggests those units date back to circa 1938. Shipman Manufacturing Co. was one of the major players in stamp vending machines in that day and there were a number of different models with counter and floor standing pedestals, along with different finishes, etc.

Here's an auction site showing what appears to be the same item as yours, partially restored, with new lock. etc., which sold at auction for $65:

Obviously, your examples were later adapted to accept Quarters rather than Nickels in the first slot. Likewise, the above image shows that the knobs were originally made of Bakelite, which are obviously missing from your examples.

While it doesn't seem these machines have a significant value, they are certainly nice nostalgic pieces that many collectors would have interest in.

Those are great! Good price too. I would love to have one for a future "man cave" in my basement.

Coooooooool! I love old machines! The local CVS had one when I was a kid, but not nearly as nifty as those! Whatever you do, do NOT paint them. Did they come with keys?

As with anything "collectible" you have to have the space to store them. But these Stamp Vending Machines are surprisingly affordable, at least if ebay listings are any indication. In fact, if you ebay search for "Postage Stamp Vending Machines" more than 100 entries come up.

Here's a later stamp vending machine (1960's or 1970's era, I presume) that is rather unique, yet ebay is selling at a surprisingly affordable price based on the fact that the auction has only one bid (so far)--the problem with these things is that they have no current use with the value of today's stamps far exceeding what the coin mechanism could be adjusted for:
