Picked up this card. Don't know anything about the cancel other than it appears to be a repeating-type machine cancel. I just thought it was a handsome card. |

Here is a seapost cancel for the 'A' Line trip from Colon (Panama) to St. Nazaire, on a Guadeloupe stamp: This route ran from 1865 to 1932, more or less. |

I have a question about the postmark on this stamp: I did some searching on the encircled 71 postmark and came across something called "Oblitérations du Jour de L'an". What does this really mean as the translation to "Cancellations Day The year" doesn't make much sense? What is the function? Also I found reference that the number corresponds to a district office in Paris. Is this correct? The address in the message is for Wellington, Somerset of England and it is a British postcard so that's somewhat confusing as well. |

I believe your cancel was used for the heavy volume of mail at New Year's. |

AnthonyUK reminded us of this thread over in the More Paquebot Cancels thread, so I'll bump it back to life with a few: These are all losange gros chiffres "big number" cancels. Versailles (6327) on a 25c: Shanghai (5104) on a 5c: Yokohama (5118) on an 80c Ceres: |

WOW - Love this thread !! Thanks everyone for sharing all those nice items and interesting information! Cjd - Your 80c Bordeau with the GC 5118 postmark is lovely, despite the condition. Please allow me to share some of my stuff. I happen to have some relevant material listed in an excel inventory file of mine, so I have sorted the lines to show the 'french abroad' on top and put a snapshot from excel for a jpg presentation here, sorry for the poor quality, the conversion was quite rough! Please share more of the French! |

That is a lovely selection you have there Blaamand and a great way to display it. I agree about CJDs Yokohama! I know it is probably too much to expect but this sure does look like a Paris Star with the numeral 40. It was used for a very short period so it would be unbeleivably lucky to find one. |

That would be a wonderful find. I don't have an image of a strike to compare it to...just the illustration on marcophilie. Looks like perhaps two are known to exist?
My completely inexpert opinion, the illustration shows that the vertical stroke of the 4 is only about half the height of the number, so there should not be ink all the way to the top. I see a ghost of a horizontal bar on the 4, but it should be lower? Guessing... |
