BookbndrBob - sorry, I can't tell you exactly what your Paris cancel is other than some kind of arrival mark. However I would say that's an extremely cool combination of two postmarks on one beautiful stamp. The red inked postmark stands perfectly out of the black - I simply love it

Thanks Blaamand. Yes, this one really caught my eye...and the price was right. On covers, I had seen French arrival cancels in the proximity of the stamp, but this one really stood out because it tells the story concisely.

AnthonyUK has already posted a beautiful 'ESTRANGERO BARCELONA' cancellation in his OP. However I think the postal history, combining both usage abroad and maritime postal use, is so interesting that this cancellation deserves a 'bump'. Anthony inspired me; I just had to include something similar in my maritime mail collection...so yesterday I decided to do some shopping:

'ESTRANGERO BARCELONA' on France 40c. French letters brought on ships calling at Barcelona could be mailed directly from Barcelona, without ever seeing a French postal clerck.

In addition to the single I came across this example of combined postage, 40c + 80c. Not in best condition, still serves its purpose for me.

...and finally an entire cover. Smudged cancellation, but it is there.

Reverse with cds of Barcelona, March 20 - 1864??

Neither are in show-piece condition, but within my budget. Can't wait to receive the actual stamps and add to my collection.

another "Etoile de Paris " on a pretty rare cover , a "ballon monté"
durring the 1870 war . paris was under pressure and the only way to exit the letters was the sky , per balloon ?

hope it's not to difficult for you to understand what is on the little papers .
if you have any questions , i'll try to explain .
this is not my main collection ,it's just my "special" cancellation album part .
that's why some of them are not the best aspect of the stamp , and some of them are damage because not easy to find ..even in france !

Derwins - A warm welcome to the forum. Quite a nice introduction you made of yourself with all those fabulous French cancellations . I particularly like those Corps Exped. and Army post cancellations e.g. from Mexico and Crimea. Most interesting! I have yet to find any of those. Congratulations - and thanks for sharing

You're displaying a beautiful "Francia Via di Mare" cover as well. I have a similar cover, and I have been trying to find more information about the application of that particular postmark. However I have not found much useful information, so I was thinking you might be able to help? Was this cancel applied in a quay-side facility in the French port prior to departure - onboard a mail steamer enroute from France to Italy - or upon arrival in the Italian port of call?
