The meaning and purpose of stamps. Generating revenues for moving mail, Collecting stamps for hobby or investment, documenting history and now generating income for small countries........what else? Commerating people/places? A little piece of paper with glue on it's back. Amazing. The economy in the former Soviet Union is in very sad shape. To bolster their income, the independent Russian states have started issuing topical stamps in the hope that the world market will buy them and not require the associated postal services. Whatever the reason, we are all winners when such lovely stamps and souvenir sheets are issued. This one is from Abkhazia issued in 1999. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AbkhaziaWhat other countries would fall in this category? Tuvalu?

No need to duck Cjd - Tuvalu IS one of the most prolific stamp issuing entities. I only collect definitives and pre-1983. Ironically, Tuvalu is one of the few countries that recognizes Abkhazia. Other countries in the same category as Abkhazia include South Ossetia and Transnistria. Added: Tuvalu is NOT in the same category as Abkhazia politically in that it is a fully recognized independent nation and is a member of the United nations. http://TuvaluIslands.com |

Abkhazia is a disputed region, not recognized by the UN or UPU and it's stamps can only be considered Bogus for the time being. At least that's how I understand it. Londonbus1...but then what do I know ? |

Thanks, BeeSee...and to clarify, my bad, I meant a country generating money, an income with stamps. Two topics and one subject. Either one is fine. I have seen your postings from Tuvalu and posted mine showing the airport, post office, national bank and the banana plantation in one block! warrehouse, thanks, just read the info on Western Sahara. I lived in Oran/Algerie from 1971 to the end of 1973. I remember one of the office guys being upset about his brother leaving to the area of Western Sahara since Algeria supported the cause. Now after reading the article I understand. Even in today's world news from these small countries are limited. The reason to not only generate revenues from stamps, it may also, like in my case, educate the world public on who they are.....that may friend, besides licking a stamp, is a positive thing. Cjd, thanks for the caution sign. I never ducked in my life and I am sure as hell not going to start now. |

Quote: Abkhazia...stamps can only be considered Bogus for the time being. You might have to take that back, 'bus...they've issued a flag stamp: Then again, you can call it a cinderella and happily tuck it away there. |

CJD, I would call that a genuine stamp, if it was issued by the government of Abkhazia. There are legitimate stamps, and many bogus issues. Here is a postally used cover from Transnistria. |

Thanks peterc4, Interesting link. I will spend a lot of time with this topic learning about what is going on in this world. I talked to my grandson yesterday and asked him about Abkhazia. He said: what? say again? and I cannot really fault him because I had not heard anything about Abkhazia either since yesterday. My point is besides all the technical aspects, perfs, watermarks, holes, cancellations, colors, etc. there is this common bond between these stamps. Every stamp tells a story That is what is so fascinating to me, it is just like dealing with people except it is easier to deal with a stamp..... Here is a stamp from Nagorno Karabakh, anniversary of 20 years independence |
