Sorry to revive an old thread but I have finally dug all this back out. I am looking at a page of Zemstvo's and using the Soloviev catalog. What is the currency they use as I need to convert to Cdn $ to have some idea of value?

Thanks again for the previous recommendations. I have been largely using Liapin for simplicity sake for most stamps and due to the extensiveness of covering varieties and errors. What I am really missing right now is a specialized catalog on postmarks. The previous collector specialized in these and there are literally stockbooks full of the various post offices and postmarks but I have no idea how to determine rarity or value except for the odd note he left here or there.

Thanks again!

stamps101,

Soloviev prices are in rubles (at least in the catalogues I have).

There is no detailed catalogue dealing with all Russian / Soviet postmarks. Given the size of the country that would be an impossible task to accomplish. A good basis to start with is A.V.Kiryushkin and P.E.Robinson's "Russian Postmarks. An introduction and guide (published by Barefoot, UK). The two authors subsequently published another excellent book: "Russian Railway Postmarks" (Barefoot, 1994).

There are more detailed works dealing with Georgian postmarks, or Siberian postmarks, or pre-adhesive postmarks, etc.

Thanks for the replies!
Are there a lot of specialists for postmarks or are they in demand at all? There are several stockbooks just dedicated to the postmarks and listing the places.

stamps101,

I would suspect that the demand for Russian postmarks will rise in the years to come, as has taken place already with Russian stamps. If you have in your hands an extensive collection ("several stockbooks"), possibly arranged and identified by area (within the Russian Empire) or field (for example, railway postmarks), such material would be sought after. Today you can occasionally find some Russian postmarks ebay items for Russian Offices abroad cancellations, St Petersburg numerical cancellations, etc.

If you do care to show some of your cancellation items here, it would be interesting for everyone and maybe I can offer some additional information.

Ok over the next few months I will take pics of everything. I still have books full of covers to do as well that you had started helping with awhile ago. Sadly for me, the prev owner trades many high CV items for the covers and postmarks but at least I know the market for those items he traded away. Oh well, I have learned a lot from this collection.

Stay tuned!

I use the Zagorsky catalog and like the fact every stamp is illustrated which makes it easier for me to identify a stamp.
