Trains On Stamps

This small (72mm wide x 73.5mm high) cinderella souvenir sheet commemorates the 125th anniversary of Swiss Railways. It has an offset-printed "cancel" of the INTEBA Stamp Exhibition in Zurich 23.4.1972. Inscription on the sheet says "8th International Exhibition of the FISAIC Railroaders". FISAIC is the International Federation of Cultural and Leisure Associations of Railwaymen. It is an Eurocentric organization.

On March 21, 1963 Switzerland issued this 20 centime Stamp (Sc #424) to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Bern-Loetschberg-Simplon Railway Company. The Company operated from 1913 to 2006. Stamp depicts a passenger train moving over a tall viaduct.

In 1944 Iran issued this 25 dinar, violet stamp (Sc #883) depicting a train crossing a bridge as a part of its pictorial definitive series of 1942-6 (34 stamps).

Here is the 5c yellow green value (Sc #RA3) from Peru's 1925-6 postal tax set. These stamps were required for mail in Tacna and Arica. The tax was designed to help defray the cost of a plebiscite, as the area was under Chilean occupation at that time. Stamp depicts a train moving through Morro Arica.

On December 23, 1991 Latvia issued a series of overprinted and revalued USSR small definitive stamps with a transportation theme. The red surcharged 100 kopeks on 7 kopeks value (Sc #309) of this series depicts modern transportation, and the green surcharged 500 kopeks on 2 kopeks value (Sc #310) shows old transportation.

This June 11, 2005, 3 litas stamp (Sc #793) of Lithuania depicts a modern electric train emerging from the Kaunas railway tunnel (completed in 1862). Black and white photo shows tunnel under original construction.

This December 15, 1957, 900 bolivianos value (Sc #C204) is from a set of six, identically-designed, differently-colored airmail stamps issued by Bolivia to commemorate the opening of the railway line from Santa Cruz to Yacuiba on the Argentine border. The line is 517 km in length and it took 15 years to build. It was constructed by Argentina and paid for with Bolivian petroleum. Note that Bolivian President Silas Zuazo and Argentinian President Eugenio Aramburo are depicted on the stamp.

This philatelic cover of Germany bears a special cancellation on its two definitive stamps, including a 40 pf value with a coil leader.

The Aschaffenburg 1 cancellation publicizes the exhibition "140 Years of Railways in Spessart" and depicts a circa 1855-60, 2-4-0 steam locomotive. Spessart is region of low, wooded mountains in Bavaria and Hesse.
