The Liverpool-Manchester Railway was opened in 1830 with a great fanfare and a procession of some grand locomotives including Stephenson's Rocket. However, tragedy was to mar the opening ceremony. A Liverpool MP, William Huskisson, while trying to cross from his carriage aboard the Northumbrian to meet the visiting Prime Minister, the Duke of Wellington was knocked down by the Rocket coming fast on another line.
He was badly injured in the leg and died later that day through loss of blood. George Stephenson himself drove the train that took him for treatment.
The Liverpool-Manchester Line was a great success story of British Railways.
