Alain J. Gerbault (1893-1941), a French aviator and tennis champion, made a solo circumnavigation of the world (1923-29) in his 39-foot racing/cruising gaff sloop, Firecrest. Here is an image of a stamp depicting Gerbault and his sailboat, designed and engraved by Albert Decaris, and issued by France on January 10, 1970, Scott No. 1263, Y&T No. 1621. - nethryk  |

The Lucie on a stamp from Bermuda:  A George VI definitive from the Cayman Islands:  The Lucie is one of those stamp "error" stories. She was an American six-meter racer of some renown, winning many races over a long span of time. She was photographed while in Bermuda, and her photo ended up being selected for the Bermuda stamp, apparently based on a mistaken belief that the photo depicted a boat from Bermuda named Viking, but alas, it was not Viking's day. It caused no small amount of consternation to have unintentionally honored an American boat that had bested so many local challengers. Lucie was built for Briggs Cunningham, who would be well-known to any fans of either yachting or auto racing. Lucie was named for his wife. The best part of this story is that Lucie is racing competitively, 80 years on. [edit: Just to round out the story, here is a picture of one of Cunningham's racers, a Cunningham C5R that placed third at LeMans in 1953.  |

That is a nice schooner Cjd. Every time I hear the word schooner I think of  It was great tasting beer until the company was bought out by the multinational InBev. Why do they always have to spoil everything? See fifia you're not the only one who likes beer here. |
