Nells250 - Great topic idea! Here is an image of an engraved stamp depicting the allegorical hand of "Cuba" unmasking a "Fifth Columnist," issued by Cuba on July 5, 1943 as one of set of five stamps urging citizens to destroy the enemy within during World War II, Scott No. 375. Note the Cuban coat of arms design on "Cuba's" bracelet and the ugly expression on the face of the "unmasked" conspirator. - nethryk |

Here is an image of a stamp depicting an actress holding masks representing, respectively, tragedy and comedy, designed by Slovak painter and graphic artist Ernest Zmeták (1919-2004), combined engraved by Josef Hercík and photogravure, and issued by Czechoslovakia on August 29, 1974 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, Scott No. 1948. Note: These masks have their roots in the theater of ancient Athens, where they helped actors project broad emotions for large crowds while portraying different roles. The frowning tragedy mask represents Melpomene, the muse of tragedy, and the smiling comedy mask represents Thalia, the muse of comedy. - nethryk |
