Nice, filipo! The "bill" stamps are early Canadian revenue stamps.

Ncbuckeye, thank you for the info! I don't know much about the Canadian stamps, especially these early issues.

Nice little lot!

On the 10c small Queen, the cancel seems odd to me.

What would this be?

edit: A fancy cancel!
edit: added illustration C5 from Boggs Canadian cancels book see below post.

I love picking up old pages like this-- Likely they may have never been checked for varieties errors and watermarks. Not saying the guy who put them on the page wasn't a true philatist or collector but the farther back you go the better the odds. Nice centering on the 2cent large queen and great montreal cancel on the 6cent.

I am more glad when I get an album from some old collector who knows his job, because in that case I am more sure that stamps are genuine... This album is from the year 1888., so, nobody in that time was educated about entire world errors... so, I am still happy when he the first owners has had some knowledge.

Puzzler - I am not familiar with old Canadian postmarks, but this for me surely looks like some kind of forgery.

Very nice lot! By chance, is the album a faded pale blue?

Hi! You think about the color of the album's cover? No, it is pink.

To follow up on ncbuckeye, those are third issue bills stamps issued in 1868. There were two (obviously) previous issues in 1864 and 1865.

Check out these website for more info and pictures.

Ahh ok, different album then the old 1800's one I found once. Definitely a nice lot of Canada. Check that 2 cent green for laid paper on the back!

Puzzler - A variation of the cancel is shown as one of a group under the heading of Non-Official Obliterators in Boggs. I can't find a place attached to the design but it's particularly nice because it is on a high value stamp and not the standard three cent.
Look for the illustration c5.

Thanks! I cut, copied and posted to the above post.

A friend has that book and I was going to ask him if he could look.

It always amazes me how much work went into collecting and copying the cancels before computers came into being. Tracing paper, charcoal, patience, more patience.

stamps101, if you would like to see the entire album (or what of it left after all of the pickings :)), you can see all the photos here:

www.photobucket.com/albums/dd469/raznorazno/old%20album

all photos are in a low resolution, but I can make better scans if you want to see some stamps enlarged...
