Northern Bilberry





Nina Spore Kreutzmann has once again created two beautiful designs of Greenlandic herbs, this time with Northern Bilberry and Labrador tea. The series, which began in 2011, consists of a total of six stamps of which the last two will be issued in 2013.

Fifa: thanks for putting on the Vaccinium uliginosum (northern or bog bilberry)and Ledum groenlandicum (Labrador Tea) stamps.

My favourite of the blue-berried Vaccinium species is actually Vaccinium angustifolium (low-bush or low sweet blueberry). It is an annual tradition in my area (northern Ontario) to trek into the bush to pick them for use in jams, jellies and pies. Its hard to beat blueberry pie and vanilla ice-cream.

Labrador Tea is found throughout the Northern Hemisphere and its leaves were used as a substitute for tea leaves but I can tell you that it doesn't make a great tea. Its very high in tannic acid and actually turns the water in swamps to a tannin or tea colour. The other interesting aspect is that the plant's Latin name "groenlandicun" actually means "of Greenland"

Genets (Genetta genetta) are Old World feliforms related to cats, civets, linsangs, fossa, and mongooses. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a genet, printed by photogravure, and issued by Romania on June 30, 1993, Scott No. 3841.

Fifa - Red Deer in their characteristic pose. I have White-tailed Deer in my front yard most nights. They feed off my huge crab apple tree but the pickings are getting slim as they've got most of the apples that they can reach. One of them only has 3&1/2 legs but manages quite well.
