This is such a lovely dragon! Does anyone know if it is part of legends or if it refers to the blue dragon semiprecious stone? |

To Kris Rascher:
The stamp Kgwanyape is in the Myths and Legends set of 6 issued by the Botswana Post on September 25, 2012.
Kgwanyape is a mythical creature in Tswana belief that is associated with heavy storms and hurricanes. This could be the reason for the design showing rain and cloud in the background.
According to the legend, Kgwanyape resides in the Mosope River which passes through the village of Moshupa. The villagers avoid crossing the Mosope River particularly at night.

Malaysia Legacy of the Loom January 12, 2012 This set of stamps were issued to celebrate the Year of Dragon. The miniature sheet features a Ming Dynasty Empress robe. It is embroidered with a magnificent dragon flying in the sky with a fiery pearl in its right paw. The background of cloud and bats symbolize auspice. There are two smaller, circular-shaped dragons on the shoulders. |

Today is "Appreciate A Dragon Day!" Here is an image of a stamp depicting "Miss Rotary" standing by a staircase featuring ornamental dragons at the former Wat Ho Phraeko Buddhist temple in Vientiane, and the Rotary International emblem, designed by Laotian artist Ky Phung Chaleun, engraved by French artist Jean Miermont (1915-1973), and issued by Laos on June 28, 1971 as one of a set of two stamps commemorating the 50th anniversary of Rotary International, Scott No. 215, plus a photo of a relevant detail of the dragon staircase. - nethryk |

Nethryk, I've never heard of an "Appreciate a Dragon Day", so here's one of Jersey's beautiful ones from last year to appreciate. The Beowulf Dragon of the Old English epic poem. |

Here's a few from my humble accumulation: The dragon here (we've seen the 35k issue earlier) represents the Bolsheviks. Crete 1901 sees this 5 drachma issue showing St. George and the dragon, which had previously been issued with both black and vermillion "PROVISIONAL" overprints. This air mail set from Iceland was issued to celebrate the millennium of the first session of the Icelandic parliament. They have to be amongst my favourites of all stamps. The dragons are just what you would expect from Viking mythology and the stamps are works of art. |
