Hey CJD, I've just found the stamp from Schroop. I'm actually living in this village right now. It's real name is Szropy in polish language. How did you get this stamp? It's really amazing to see this stuff from past era. Thanks |

Welcome, rebelsoul. Tell us about Schroop/Szropy. Any idea what it would've been like back in plebiscite-time?
I spend a ridiculous amount of time looking at cancels, but some of them, like this one, just jump out at you. |

I have been putting most of my bullseyes on the main thread, but here is a Bandarawela strike from 1925 on a KGV: Bandarawela was one of those higher-elevation towns in Ceylon that had a moderated climate that attracted colonials. I'll add a TPO from Dahomey...Ouidah to Cotonou, which are 24 miles apart. Cotonou was the only significant port in Dahomey. Though it is less desirable for not having a readable date, I don't have too many traveling post office cancels from Dahomey. |

What is this main thread you are referring to? Another SOTN thread? While I am here I can add this Swedish 6 ore with almost the entire LARBRO strike on the stamp: Great scans of wonderful stamps, nice job everyone! Have a good one, Skilo54 |

That is a nice postmark on the Dahomey stamp, regardless! Nic eof you to show it to us! I have recently gathered together all of my remaining German material that is on-piece and am pleased to report that a bunch of it is SOTN or very close to being SOTN. Here are a few of the prime candidates: First up this pair of Numeral of Value - 200m with a GENTHIN postmark dated 20/8/23: |

skilo54, the mother of all bullseye threads is here: https://goscf.com/t/11866but some non-classic stuff slips in there now and again. I post in both from time to time because we're really only talking about eye candy, and not diluting a research or educational thread. |

2: what is the definition of a socked on the nose cancel? 1: It's not you. These are blocked links by Photobucket to their picture hosting site that now charges for posting pictures to sites like this. So we now just use the picture upload function under "Full Reply". https://goscf.com/t/549652. It's basically what the phrase says: a cancel that has been struck as complete as possible on a stamp. There is something of a preference for upright cancels and for centrally placed cancels. Most are circular date stamp types like the above but other cancel types qualify including fancy ones. Some people will include socked on the nose (SOTN) for cancels on blocks and pairs. |

i had the idea that SOTN was thing referring to exceptionel stamps. that not only does the cancel has to be perfect (centered, sharp, and upright) the stamp itself also had to be perfect. in denmark/Skandinavia we have luxury and "pragt" which means delightful or something as the 2 highest grades. this would be a luxury item, although the cancel is a little to the south. my personal preference is that I need a crystal clear cancel, but I don't care if the cancel is upright or sideways as long as you can clearly determine the date and town. faultless condition with good center goes above the cancel. a stamp like this could not quite be called a luxury stamp I think, but the center is good, the perforation is superb and the cancel just screams - definately a keeper. |
